GRE® General Test Content

The GRE General Test is a computer-delivered exam designed to evaluate the fundamental skills required for graduate-level education. The test is divided into three key sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Each section evaluates a different set of cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills.

Analytical Writing

Section: One writing task

Time Allotted: 30 minutes

What to expect: This section measures your ability to articulate and support complex ideas, analyze arguments, and maintain a coherent and well-structured response. Your writing will be assessed based on clarity, logical flow, and analytical depth.

Verbal Reasoning

Section: Two sections

Time Allotted:

  • Section 1: 12 questions (18 minutes)
  • Section 2: 15 questions (23 minutes)

 What to expect: This section assesses your ability to understand and evaluate written material, recognize relationships between words and concepts, and draw logical conclusions from textual information. It includes Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, and Sentence Equivalence questions.

Quantitative Reasoning

Sections: Two sections

Time Allotted:

  • Section 1: 12 questions (21 minutes)
  • Section 2: 15 questions (26 minutes)

What to expect: This section evaluates your mathematical problem-solving abilities, focusing on topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. You will encounter multiple-choice questions, numeric entry questions, and quantitative comparison questions.

The Analytical Writing section always appears first, followed by Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning.

One key advantage of the GRE General Test is that it allows test-takers to move forward and backward within a section. You can review and modify your answers before submitting the section, which provides flexibility and helps ensure accuracy.

Test takers also have an on-screen calculator available during the Quantitative Reasoning section.
